2000 MIAC WOMEN'S SOCCER PREVIEW

The 2000 MIAC women's soccer season gets rolling with non-conference games beginning September 1. In 1999, Macalester won the MIAC title and advanced to the championship game at the NCAA Division III Championship. The Scots graduated eight starters from the squad that finished with an impressive 10-0 conference record a year ago. Macalester has a 32 game conference winning streak entering the 2000 season and have outscored competition 119-1 during that time. Macalester is currently ranked eighth in the NSCAA Div. III National Rankings.

Watch for St. Benedict to be at the top of the MIAC standings throughout the 2000 campaign. The Blazers return several talented field players and are hoping to improve on their 8-2 record and second-place MIAC finish from last fall. Gustavus, last season's third place finisher with a 7-2-1 MIAC record, is ready to challenge for the conference title with nine starters returning.

Augsburg College
Head Coach
: Mike Navarre (2nd season)
1999 Record: 2-15 (1-9 MIAC / 10th)
Key Returners: (Name, Yr, Pos, Highlight)
Brenda Selander (Sr., F), team's leading scorer last two seasons
Anne Ducharme (Sr., MF)
Stacy Waterman (Sr., MF)
Laura Grant (So., D)
Katie Cheese (Jr., D)
Season Preview:
Last year, Augsburg's women's soccer team suffered through another long losing stretch, but toward the end of the season, the Auggies made some significant strides, breaking a 26-game, two-season losing streak by winning consecutive games to finish 2-15 overall and 1-9 in the MIAC. This year, look for definite improvement from the women's soccer squad. The team begins the year with 19 players, including eight freshmen and four sophomores and juniors who are newcomers to the program. "Our freshman class is strong, and we're definitely going to be improved," said head coach Mike Navarre. "The team is a collection of positive lifeforces. They respect each other, they work for each other and they have fun with each other." One of the keys for the Auggies, though, will come in the leadership of their three returning seniors -- Brenda Selander (Sr., Oakdale, MN/Tartan HS), Anne Ducharme (Sr., Brooklyn Park, MN/Champlin Park HS) and Stacy Waterman (Sr., Burnsville, MN). Selander, the team's captain this year, has been Augsburg's leading scorer the last two seasons, and enters her senior year with 10 goals and three assists on her career. Ducharme has played just about every position on the field at one time or another in her career, and should fill a leadership role in the midfield this year. Meanwhile, Waterman has been a reliable midfielder during her Auggie career. Selander will lead the Auggie forwards, along with freshmen Melissa Peterka (Fr., Minnetonka, MN) and Simone Burch (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS). Both were solid, all-conference players during their prep careers. In the midfield, Waterman and Ducharme return as starters, and will be joined by two freshmen who Navarre described as "playmakers" -- Kristi Ofstad (Fr., Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Stevens HS) and Heidi Hilleren (Fr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS). Ofstad played on teams that won the South Dakota state title in 1998 and finished second in 1999, while Hilleren was an all-conference player on an East team that reached the section finals her senior year. On defense, Laura Grant (So., Starbuck, MN/Minnewaska Area HS) returns as a defensive stopper, along with Katie Cheese (Jr., Shakopee, MN) and Abigail Mildbrand (Jr., Greenwood, Wis.) as marking backs. Newcomers Kristin Lideen (Fr., Champlin, MN/Champlin Park HS) and Kim Glumich (So., Moorhead, MN) also will play key roles on defense. Lideen was an all-conference selection at Champlin Park. Amber Nadreau (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian HS) will also play defense for the Auggies. In goal, Navarre will likely rely on freshman Laura Hoffman (Fr., Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Kennedy HS), who earned all-conference honors her senior season. Kristen Opalinski (So., Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe HS) will back up Hoffman.

Bethel College
Head Coach
: Scott Krohn (1st season)
1999 Record: 7-10-1 (2-7-1 MIAC / 9th)

Sara Robazek, JR, M, started 16 games as a sophomore, 4 assists in '99
Season Preview:
Bethel women's soccer will again be looking to build as new coach Scott Krohn takes over the reigns of the Royals. Coach Krohn has a strong nucleus of experienced players returning and a talented group of newcomers to build around with hopes of an upper division finish. Sophomore goalkeep Gretchen Bratnober had an impressive first-year and is looking to continue her development into one of the MIAC's top goalkeepers.

The Royals begin the season with a challening non-conference schedule, including three games in California, as they prepare for MIAC competition.

Carleton College
Head Coach
: Bo Conroy (1st season)
1999 Record: 10-4-2 (6-3-1 MIAC / 4th)
Key Returners: (Name, Yr, Pos, Highlight)
Morgan Russell-Dempsey, Jr., Mid., 7 goals, 5 assists, 19 points in 1999
Birungi Mutebi, So., Mid., 5 goals, 2 assists, 12 points in 1999
Julia Gardner, Sr., Mid., 4 goals, 8 points in 1999
Season Preview:
With a strong team led by seven experienced seniors, first-year head coach Bo Conroy is looking to build on last year’s solid 10-4-2 finish (6-3-1 MIAC, fourth). He’s got a leader in every corner of the field: Senior co-captain and forward Julia Gardner will provide inspiration to younger players with her workhorse attitude. Senior co-captain Molly Metzger returns after taking last season off to study in India, and Conroy is looking to her to provide leadership in the midfield. “Molly’s always right smack in the middle of it,” he said. “She’s confident, has great distribution skills, and can hang on to the ball.” Senior midfielder Kate Kingery also will contribute immediately. If this team has one weak spot, it’s at goalkeeper. With the loss of All-MIAC honorable mention goalie Megan Burns, sophomore Piper Below will take up the starting role and keeping her healthy is key, said Conroy, who’s challenge during the recruiting process is to attract a young goalkeeper he can mold as a backup. Newcomers Amy Holmes (F/Fy./San Francisco/Second Team All-League Bay Counties) and “the two Stephs”—Stephanie Johnson (F/Fy./Tiburon, Calif./First Team MCAL) and Stephanie Lee (Def./Fy./Beaverton, Ore./Second Team All-Metro) have shown early confidence and definitely will see playing time as the season gets underway.

The Concordia College women's soccer team will be looking to break into new ground this fall. They will have a new coach for the first time since 1987 and several sophomores that provided a spark at the end of last year will be back to help the Cobbers make a run at the top of the MIAC. First year women's coach Jim Cella, who is also the men's coach, will be hoping the experience the women have will propel them to a winning record in the MIAC, something they haven't had since 1986. Leading the way will be two forwards who have shown the knack for putting the ball in the net, they are; Jordi Kortan (Sr., Moorhead MN, Moorhead HS.) who had 16 goals last year and Kendra Lee (So., Jamestown ND, Jamestown H.S.) who had 43 points in 1999. Anchoring the defense will be Kristen Orme (So., Mendota Heights MN, Cretin-Derham Hall H.S.) who was Honrable Mention All-MIAC last year and also the team's rookie of the year.

The Gustavus women's soccer team looks forward to the 2000 season with a lot of optimism as nine starters and 18 letterwinners return from a team that compiled a mark of 13-3-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the MIAC last year.
Head Coach Mike Stehlik will need to replace all-conference forward Katie Ryerse and all-conference central defender Mercede Kortus, however, he returns the rest of his squad intact including all-conference midfielder Renee Beaudry, a sophomore who tallied eight goals and six assists for 22 points last year as a freshman. Other key returners include junior goalkeeper Linnea Carlson, senior defender Sonja Cordes, senior midfielder Jenna Hemenway, junior forward Michelle Kurtz, the team's leading returning scorer with nine goals and six assists for 24 points, junior midfielder Tiffany Alstead, senior midfielder Katie Cullen, junior defender Erin Halligan and junior defender Mandy Havnen. Lucy Goldstein (Sr., F, Concord, MA / Concord-Carlisle) 4 goals, 6 ast.
Katie Stephens (So., F, Urbana, IL) 3 goals / 5 assists
Season Preview:
Macalester took 2nd in last year's NCAA Div III soccer playoffs after winning the national championship the year before, and comes into the 2000 season with a 32-game MIAC winning streak. The Scots have gone 75-9-3 over the last four years and during their conference streak have out-scored their opponents by a 119-1 margin.

Coach John Leaney's team, however, faces a major test in retaining its excellence after losing eight starters to graduation, most being three- or four-year starters. Gone are All-Americans Kate Ryan Reiling, the MIAC Players of the Year, and Holly Harris, who is second on the team's all-time scoring list. The Scots must also replace their goalkeeper and the best group of defenders they've ever had.

Despite the losses, Macalester is eager to keep the conference winning streak going and making a bid for a fourth straight MIAC crown. Leaney has the services of three seniors who have played big roles over the past three years: captains Amanda Cue (Sr., Ashland, OR), Lucy Goldstein (Sr., Concord, MA / Concord-Carlisle) and Kristine Lamm (Sr., South Windsor, CT). Goldstein scored four goals and Lamm assisted on 13 last season, while Cue is expected to show her versatility by playing several key positions this year.

Much is expected from forward Katie Stephens (So., Urbana, IL), who burst on the scene for the Scots late last year. Stephens is expected to be a scorer this year and will be joined up front by Goldstein or newcomer Anna Gierke (FY, Milwaukee, WI / Nicollet). Another player who made an impact late last year is Margot Kane (Jr., Auburndale, MA / Newton North) who showed good improvement throughout the season from the midfield spot.

The Blazers suffered great losses with the graduation of All-American goalie, Lisa Grefe and All-Region defender Kristi Kelly last year, but opportunity awaits talented young players waiting to take their spots. With a strong commitment to pursuing excellence every step of the way, the Blazers will enjoy what promises to be another exciting, winning campaign.

Katie Lentz (Jr., Mid., 4 goals, 8 assists)
Bernadette Balla (So., For., 4 goals, 1 assist)
Season Preview:
You'll have to forgive Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach Dan Blank if you notice him carrying a numerical roster around with him on the practice field.

But then, when almost your entire starting lineup is different than it was a year ago, it might take the veteran coach a little longer to put names to faces.

"We lost a lot from a year ago," admitted Blank, who graduated five starters, and had several others, including last year's team MVP and leading scorer Joanna Fitzhugh, not return for various reasons. "To have to replace nine key players, including seven starters, that's a huge project."

Call it Rebuilding 101.

"It's going to be a rebuilding year, no question about it," admitted Blank, whose team finished fifth in the MIAC a year ago (5-4-1) en route to a 12-5-1 overall record, the Cardinals' most wins since they finished 12-5-1 in 1995. "We're approaching it with the mindset that we are starting from ground zero and working our way up. Right now our concern is to get a strong foundation set and then to build on it week by week."

"We're going to be a very good team down the line," continued Blank. "It might take four weeks, it might take six weeks, but there's no question we have the talent to become a very good team."
