Offensive Player of the Week
Gustavus Adolphus College senior running back Ray Wilson (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino Grace) set a school single-game rushing record with 258 yards on 28 carries in a 34-31 victory over Augsburg College on Saturday in St. Peter. Wilson set the tone on the first possession of the game as he ran six times for 35 yards and a one-yard touchdown run. Midway through the fourth quarter, he scored the eventual game-winning touchdown on an 81-yard dash. Wilson ran for 11 first downs to help the Gusties post a total of 33:10 in time of possession. Gustavus improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Defensive Player of the Week
Saint John's University junior defensive back Bobby Klint (Minneapolis, Minn./Totino Grace) tallied eight tackles (five solo), in addition to an interception, forced fumble and a blocked field goal in the Johnnies' 20-14 overtime win at St. Olaf. Klint's interception on the Oles' third play of the second half gave the Johnnies prime field position on St. Olaf's 15-yard line. Seven plays later, running back Jakob Reding gave the Johnnies a 14-7 lead. After the Oles reached the Johnnies' five-yard line with one second left in regulation, Klint blocked a 22-yard field goal attempt, which sent the game to overtime. On St. Olaf's first play of overtime, John Haberman hit Ryan St. John on a pass to the Johnnies' nine-yard line, but Klint jarred the ball loose where linebacker Ryan Wimmer fell on it for SJU. Klint is currently fourth on the team in tackles with 42 (19 solo) and leads the squad with two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
Co-Special Teams Player of the Week
Concordia College junior kicker Carl Hauser (Fergus Falls, Minn.) kicked the game-winning field goal with :12 to play against Hamline to give the Cobbers an 18-17 victory and push Concordia into first place in the MIAC. The Cobbers now sit alone in first place in the conference with a 4-1 record in the MIAC and 5-2 overall. Hauser connected on a 27-yard attempt into a stiff wind for the game winner. Hauser also had four kickoffs in the game and had one touchback. His average kick went 48.2 yards.
Co-Special Teams Player of the Week
University of St. Thomas first-year kick returner/wide receiver Fritz Waldvogel (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) had a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter that helped the Tommies take a 33-31 victory over Carleton. In the game's final minute, with UST down 31-27, Waldvogel converted a first down with a 4th-and-1 reception to keep a game-winning drive alive, and UST won on the game's last play. Waldvogel caught six passes for 96 yards and has 42 catches for 633 yards and four TDs in seven college games. His punt return touchdown was just the third in the MIAC this season. The 5-2 Tommies have won four of their last five games and are assured of a.500 or better finish after going 2-8 in 2007.
