2009-10 MIAC Women's Hockey Season Preview

St. Paul, Minn. – Gustavus, winner of the past five Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) women's hockey regular season titles, is favored to win the 2009-10 Championship. The Gusties topped the Preseason Coaches' Poll with eight first place votes. St. Thomas placed second in the poll and received the two other first place votes. The Tommies are the only team other than Gustavus to win a MIAC title in the last nine years. St. Thomas last won championships in 2002-03 and 2003-04.

St. Olaf, Concordia, and Bethel round out the top five in the coaches' poll. All three teams, along with Gustavus and St. Thomas, made up the MIAC Playoff field in 2008-09. St. Catherine and Saint Benedict tied for sixth in the poll, while Saint Mary's, Hamline, and Augsburg finished up the rankings.

Career Record: 169-157-27 (14 seasons)
2008-09 Finish: 10th (2-15-1 MIAC, 5-19-1 overall)

Augsburg Season Preview

The Augsburg College women’s hockey team may have some surprises for the rest of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season.

Entering its 15th season of varsity play in 2009-10, Augsburg will feature the largest roster in program history -- 32 athletes, including 16 newcomers. The new talent, combined with a strong returning core of 16 letterwinners, brings high hopes for a return to MIAC contender status in the future.

“I’m looking forward to watching and seeing how they surprise everybody but me,” said head coach Jill Pohtilla, who has led the team since its inception as the first varsity program in the Midwest in 1995. “I know what they’re capable of.”

Augsburg finished 5-19-1 overall, 2-15-0 in MIAC play last season. But with the combination of new and returning talent, Pohtilla has high hopes for team improvement, including a return to the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs after a four-year absence.

“The expectations that we all have are to make the (conference) playoffs. We’ve never gone into a season wanting anything less,” Pohtilla said. “Making the playoffs is a tangible goal, and increasing our wins will be a part of that. The intangibles are watching our pride come back -- the kids having pride in putting their jerseys on and knowing that it means something.”

The group of 16 returning letterwinners includes a strong core of five seniors, who bring a legacy of leadership to the program.

“I’m looking forward to having our seniors finish their career on a high note,” Pohtilla said. “We have five seniors who have been great leaders throughout their careers.”

Captains Jess Olson (SR, Delano, Minn./Wayzata HS) and Whitney Restemayer (SR, Bemidji, Minn.) have been strong contributors to the program during their careers. Olson returns to her forward position after playing defense last season, while Restemayer has also been a versatile multi-position player.

Sara Toft (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Andrea Toft (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) also return to the program with three years of experience. Both have 10 goals in their collegiate careers.

Goalie Toni Menth (SR, Buffalo, Minn.) has appeared in 70 games (66 starts) in her career, with a 3.75 goals-against-average and .902 save percentage in her career.

“We’ve leaned on Toni for everything in her career,” Pohtilla said. “This year, we’ll be able to help her out in front of her.”

Elise Hedlund (JR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS), like Olson, will move back to her natural position of forward after spending last season on defense, and will be joined by returning forwards Kali Holst (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS), Jenna Knudtson (JR, Austin, Minn.) and Erin Leyden (JR, Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South HS). Holst was tied for the team’s lead in goal scoring last year with nine goals and 13 points.

Carly Facchini (JR, Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS), Jenna Marquardt (SO, New Prague, Minn.), Whitney Pratt (JR, Mitchell, S.D.), Hayley Thomas (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) and Hillary Volkman (JR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) also return to the forward lines.

On defense, Brya Erickson (JR, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) returns, after scoring three goals with five assists last season. Grace Edgar (JR, Plano, Texas/Plano West HS), who appeared in nine games last season, will contend for more time in goal this season.

The largest recruiting and transfer class in Pohtilla’s tenure at Augsburg will add plenty of quality and talent to the lineup. Numerous all-conference and two all-state recipients will join the Auggies this season.

Bethel

Coach: Charlie Burggraf
Career Record: 28-36-9 (3 seasons)

2008-09 Finish: 3rd (10-5-3 MIAC, 11-10-4 overall)
Bethel Season Preview

Bethel's women's hockey team has earned a spot in the conference playoffs in three of the last four seasons, setting the bar for excellence higher each year. In 2008-09, the Royals showed they could skate with some of the best teams in the nation. Of the eight games that went into overtime last year, four of them were against nationally ranked opponents, including Bethel's first-ever point in the MIAC standings against Gustauvs.

Much of the team's success last season could be attributed to a strong senior class. Head Coach Charlie Burggraf said, "That group was a fun bunch to coach, and the success they had in their four years is a testament to how hard they worked and encouraged the younger players around them. But in college athletics, we can't dwell on the past - we have to move on, and we've brought in some players who either are, or are going to be equally as talented."

On offense, the Royals will use a mix of experienced upper classmen with some newcomers who have shown they are ready to play at the collegiate level in the first few weeks of practice. "We're going to have to be smart on offense, make good passes, and really be assertive. There are some very good defenders and goalies in our conference and it's going to take more than just a hard slap shot to get the puck past them," said Burggraf.

Defensively, Bethel returns a veteran crew of defenders and adds some freshman to man the blue line. "I think if there's any area we're going to be pretty strong in, it's defense," said Burggraf. "We're still relatively young at the blue line, but with the playing experience each of our defenders have, we're going to make the other teams earn their shots."

As for goaltenders, a number of players will compete for time between the pipes this season. "I liked what I saw from our goalies last season, and that was a big part of our success. This year, I have no doubt that we'll be challenged, but [Assistant Coach] Mitch Baker does a great job with the goalies, and I believe they will answer the challenge when called upon to do so," said Burggraf.

Overall, Burggraf is looking forward to developing his young team with the goal of making the conference playoffs for a third consecutive season. "We've got some good talent, and we're definitely improving the quality of our depth at each position. The MIAC is a tough conference, and so the learning curve for some of our less experienced players is going to be steep, but with the leaders we have on the team, I think we're going to have a lean, tight-knit group that will work hard and that will be fun to watch."

Concordia

Coach: Ace Gregg
Career Record: 29-34-9 (3 seasons)

2008-09 Finish: 4th (7-7-4 MIAC, 10-11-5 overall)
Concordia Season Preview

The Concordia women’s hockey team will be looking to be a little more casual in 2009-10. The Cobbers are hoping to get rid of the ties and make more games casual Friday’s and Saturday’s. Last year the Cobbers recorded a team-record five ties, including four in conference play. Despite the four ties, CC finished fourth in the league standings and hosted only their second playoff game in program history.

Concordia fourth-year head coach Ace Gregg returns 11 players from last year’s team and has a core of players that have been to back-to-back MIAC playoffs. The Cobbers finished fourth in the MIAC last year after ending up in third place in 2007-08. The top-level conference finishes should help Concordia through the long grind of the five-month long season.

The Cobbers return four of their top seven scorers from last season. Leading the way up front will be Kayla Thorson (Sr., Rugby, N.D./Minot HS). Thorson was named to the MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team last season. She finished the year with five goals and 12 assists for 17 points. She led the team in assists and her point total and assist total were career highs. Thorson had three goals and seven assists in the MIAC and was in the top 15 in the conference for assists. She started the conference season by recording a point in six of the first eight games and also had at least one point in eight of the first league games.

Joining Thorson as top returning scorers will be Kaylee Black (Sr., Barrie, Ont./York University), Katelyn Dold (So., St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) and Emily Sell (Jr., Williston, N.D.)Black finished 2008-09 second on the team in assists with 10 and fifth in overall scoring with 15 points and had a career-high three assists in two different games last year. Sell had seven goals and four assists last year and had a hat trick against Concordia University on Jan. 3.

Leading the way on the blue line for the Cobbers will be sophomore Allie Bondy (Moorhead, Minn.) who was named to the MIAC All-Conference Team as a freshman last year. She was the team's most consistent defenseman last year and played on the power play and penalty kill units for the Cobbers. Bondy only finished the year with one assist but was one of the top Concordia players as far as logging a ton of ice time. Sara Sonnenberg (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) will join Bondy in giving CC experience on the blue line.

Senior Maddie Haroldson (Sartell, Minn.) will need to be the anchor in goal for the Cobbers. Haroldson is the lone returning netminder. If experience is the key to success for a goalie, then Haroldosn should have another successful season. She has played in over 2,000 minutes for the Cobbers and during that time has posted a solid 2.42 goals against average. Haroldson also has a career save percentage of 92.0% making her one of the top returning statistical goalies in the conference.

Concordia will open the season with three non-conference road games before squaring off against UW-Superior in their home opener on Nov. 13-14. The Cobbers will then open their conference schedule at home on Nov. 20-21 against St. Olaf.

Gustavus

Coach: Mike Carroll
Career Record: 219-53-15 (13 seasons)

2008-09 Finish: 1st (16-0-2 MIAC, 22-2-4 overall)
Gustavus Season Preview

The Gustavus women’s hockey team is excited about the prospects of the 2009-10 season as 14 letterwinners, including First Team American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-America selections Melissa Mackley and Kirsten Peterson, return from a team that posted a record of 22-2-4 overall and 16-0-2 in the MIAC and claimed its fifth straight conference title.  The team, which looks quite young on paper with 17 freshmen and sophomores and five juniors and seniors, has a good mix of youth and experience and the 14 returners played key roles as the Gusties claimed conference and post-season tournament honors a year ago.

Senior captain Melissa Mackley, who established herself as one of the top players in Division III a year ago, will lead this team on the ice and in the locker room.  An excellent skater and stick-handler, Mackley was the team’s leading scorer with 8 goals and 19 assists for 27 points last season.  Joining Mackley up front will be sophomores Allie Schwab (14g, 7 a), Mollie Carroll (6g, 9a), and Alyssa Gaulrapp (6g, 6a).

Defensively, the Gusties return almost every player from a unit that led all of Division III in goals against average last year at 0.76 goals per game.  Junior All-American Kirstin Peterson will anchor the blue line along with All-Conference honoree Sara Yungner, senior Alyssa Saunders, junior Kelsey Johnson, and sophomores Nara Higano, and Gina DeNucci.  In the nets, Coach Mike Carroll has the luxury of having two standout goaltenders in Danielle Justice and Emily Klatt.  Klatt ranked first (0.69) and Justice second (0.79) in Division III last year in goals against average.  Klatt finished the year with a perfect 12-0-0 mark, while Justice posted a mark of 10-2-4.

Coach Mike Carroll is also excited about the addition of eight talented first year players and hopes that the team will once again mature into one of the top teams in the country with the goal of challenging for both the conference title and the national title.

Hamline

Coach: Garnet Asmundson
Career Record: 47-91-14 (6 seasons)

2008-09 Finish: 8th (3-13-2 MIAC, 7-16-2 overall)
Hamline Season Preview

After finishing outside of the top four MIAC teams, and the playoffs, at the end of the 2008-09 season, Hamline University head coach Garnet Asmundson aims to return the Pipers to post-season play in his seventh season.

Asmundson enters the 2009-10 campaign without the 31 combined points that forwards Kate Raasch (Saint Paul, Minn.) and Brianna Miller (Woodbury, Minn.) tallied in their senior seasons last year. However, he does return the leading scorer from last year – junior Alli Miller (Fairbault, Minn.).

Miller enters her third season as a co-captain and the lone returning All-MIAC player from the 2009-10 season. Her 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points led the Pipers in all three categories a year ago. Two years ago, as a first-year, Miller tied for second on the team in scoring. She’s a tough, gritty player who Asmundson expects to continue to stand atop the team’s scoring leaderboard.

Joining Miller to lead the Piper offense is Melanie Leveille (Sr., Appleton, Wis.), who was the team’s leading scorer two seasons ago with 22 points (13 goals, nine assists). Leveille was an All-MIAC honoree in her first two years. Asmundson believes she will return to that level of play as she hopes to finish out her final year with post-season honors.

The Piper blue line will be anchored by senior Mallory Steele (Rochester Hills, Mich.), junior Megan Olson (Coon Rapids, Minn.), and sophomore Jenna Scattarelli (Elk River, Minn.). Steele has been a steady three-year starting defender and joins Miller and Leveille as a co-captain. If her consistency in strong play on the ice continues, Steele will be a major factor in helping the Pipers lower their shots-against average.

Between her first-year and sophomore year campaigns, Olson made tremendous improvements and Asmundson expects to see the same rate of progress as she begins her junior season. Scattarelli had a solid first-year campaign and Asmundson anticipates her to play a larger role on the ice in her second year.

Leading Asmundson’s new faces on the roster are a pair of first-year players expected to receive significant playing time. Haley Johnson (Bemidji, Minn.) was all-conference in her final two seasons at Bemidji High School and earned all-state honorable mention honors after scoring 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) during her senior year. Johnson is an aggressive player whose listed height of 5-3 is deceiving, as she plays “big” and is tough in one-on-one battles on the ice.

Helping to round-out the defense is Ashley Maskel (Fy., Apple Valley, Minn.). Asmundson had the opportunity to coach Maskel in lacrosse in high school and is excited about what she brings to the defense. She will also see a lot of time on the Pipers’ special teams units.

A trio of goaltenders will battle for time in net this season and will attempt to reduce the Pipers’ goals against average by at least 20% from 3.09 to under 2.50. Returners Andria Pinkerton (Sr., Minot, N.D.) and Amanda Plumm (Jr., Lake Elmo, Minn.) played 740 and 766 minutes, respectively, in net last season, splitting the goalie duties in half. First-year Amelea Gray (Bozeman, Mont.) is adding her name to the list of players fighting to be the Pipers’ primary goalie.

Pinkerton’s minutes in net last season doubled her career total and Asmundson hopes she is ready to have a solid senior year in goal. Plumm is entering her second year with the team after transferring to Hamline before her sophomore season and is looking to improve her numbers to gain more playing time in net.

Gray brings in a high level of experience and maturity that most first-years don’t possess, having attended high school at the National Sports Academy in New York, away from her home state of Montana. Asmundson is excited to see her battle the two returners for playing time and hopes that the competition increases the level of play for his goaltenders.

The Pipers need to reduce their shots on goal allowed and increase the pressure on opposing goalies from a year ago (812 versus taking 610 shots on goal). If they can do that, along with reducing the goals against average, Asumundson expects the team to put more wins in their results and return to the MIAC playoffs for the third time in four seasons.

Saint Benedict

Coach:
Patrick Michaud
Career Record: 14-41-11 (3 seasons)

2008-09 Finish: Tied 5th (6-8-4 MIAC, 8-8-4 overall)
Saint Benedict Season Preview

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer ice hockey team returns to the ice a year after narrowly missing out on the playoffs last season. After finishing the season tied for the fifth and final playoff spot, the Blazers were edged out in the tiebreaker by Saint Olaf College. A successful season highlighted by improved play from veterans and poise from first-years; the Blazers finished with an 8-8-4 record, including a 6-4-0 winning record on the road.

After losing four seniors to graduation, the team welcomed 11 talented first years to a squad already loaded with talent and potential.  Protecting the goal, the Blazers boast the talented services of junior Abbie Helminen and sophomore Lauren Herzog. Helminen, who started 15 games last season, returns after posting a career best .923 save percentage and 2.11 GAA a year ago. Herzog, voted the teams most improved player from a season go, also returns boasting a .910 save percentage and 2.68 GAA. Skating on the ice, the team will rely on a core of veterans including senior Janae Coauette, juniors Holly Reinking, Gretchen Leyendecker, and sophomores Amie Ernst, Jennifer Yelle, Kerri Graske, and Rachel Welz. Leyendecker, an All MIAC selection from a year ago and the team’s captain and leader, recorded eight goals and three assists last season. Ernst, the first Blazer named to the All First Year Team since 2002, led Saint Benedict recording ten goals and five assists last year.

The team will be getting some help from a stellar first year class that includes Catherine Pollock, Sarah Williams, and Ashley Olson who will contribute to the depth and skill of Blazer ice hockey.

This year with the team motto being “Expect Excellence”, the Blazers look to take advantage of every opportunity on the ice this season knowing  from firsthand experience just how important every period of every game can be.

St. Catherine

Coach: Brad Marshall
Career Record: 20-65-8 (4 seasons)

2008-09 Finish: Tied 5th (7-9-2 MIAC, 10-11-3 overall)
St. Catherine Season Preview

The Wildcats return 14 letter winners from the 2008-2009 squad that finished in a tie for the final playoff spot, but did not advance based on tie-breakers.  That experience, coupled with added depth from another strong recruiting class, should help the Wildcats as they strive to extend their season into March.

Now entering his fifth season, Coach Brad Marshall’s team will be lead by senior team captain Aryn Ball and an outstanding junior class that includes Michalea Michaelson, Mel Gerten and Meghan Lange.

Ball has been a team leader since she first laced up her skates for the Wildcats. Now in her third season as a team captain, Ball has also been named Rookie of the Year, earned MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention honors, set the school record for most short-handed goals and been named to the MIAC All-Sportsmanship team in her first three years.

Like Ball did, Gerten wasted no time in establishing herself as the best goalie in Wildcats history. In addition to earning MIAC Honorable Mention honors and being named to the All Rookie team in her first year, Gerten has set school records in everything from minutes played to saves in a season and wins in a career.

While Gerten aims to keep the puck out of the net, Michaelson has been a threat on the offensive end of the ice during her career. Michaelson earned MIAC All-Conference honors during her freshman and sophomore seasons. Last season, she led the MIAC in goals scored with 16 and added 13 assists to lead the Wildcats in scoring.

Another junior making her presence felt on the team is defenseman Meghan Lange.  Despite playing only half the season during her freshman year, Lange was named the Defensive MVP of the team. She built on those experiences last season and picked up MIAC All-Conference honors as a sophomore.

St. Kate’s added depth with nine first year student-athletes.  Included in that group are four new forwards. Randi Weinzierl, Ashley Tilton, Ashley Grell and Cassie Vennemann are going to add skill to the front lines that already include two stellar returners. Sophomores Cassie Rooney and Kelsey Abrahamson both earned MIAC Honorable Mention honors during their first year at St. Kate’s after picking up 19 and 13 points respectively.

The Wildcats open their season at the Division III Midwest Faceoff on November 6-7 at the MAC in St. Cloud. They open conference play on Nov 19 when they host Augsburg College.

Saint Mary's

Coach: Terry Mannor
Career Record: 32-55-11 (4 seasons)

2008-09 Finish: 8th (6-10-2 MIAC, 7-14-2 overall)
Saint Mary's Season Preview

When Saint Mary¹s University women’s hockey coach Terry Mannor looks back on last year, he sees a season of missed opportunities.

There were games the Cardinals should have won, but didn’t, and others that they could have won, but were denied.

When Mannor looks ahead to this year, he sees another season filled with opportunities - and this time, the Cardinals aren’t going to miss out.

“When you have a team filled with 90 percent freshmen and sophomores, you are going to go through some growing pains - and that’s what we went through last year,” said Mannor, whose Cardinals finished 7-14-2 overall a year ago and 6-10-2 in the MIAC. “We were in the (conference playoff) hunt right down to the season’s final weekend, but we let a lot of games get away from us and, in the end, that was the difference in us making the playoffs or not.”

And that is the lesson Mannor hopes his team learned most.

“If there’s one thing this group learned from last season, it was the importance of showing up to the rink ready to play every single day,” Mannor said. “They learned that every game, every situation is important. You have to be mentally and physically prepared to give it 100 percent every time you step on the ice.”

“The biggest difference between the good teams and the great teams is that the great teams do all the little things - and they do them well. We had more than our share of opportunities (to win games) last year, and we let some slip away.”

“We can’t afford to let that happen again this year.”

Mannor has the luxury of returning virtually his entire lineup from a year ago, including all-conference defenseman Dy-anna Stewart (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and honorable-mention selections Katie Cachey (Orland Park, Ill.), Jamie Henneman (Countryside, Ill.) and Madeline Lenz (White Bear Lake, Minn.).

Cachey led the team in scoring a year ago, boasting 13 points, while also scoring seven goals to share the team’s goal-scoring lead with Henneman, Stevie Fiek (Rochester, Minn.), and Ingrid Klockars (Wheaton, Ill.).

Lenz, meanwhile, appeared in 18 of the team’s 23 games during her freshman season last year, compiling a 2.76 goals-against-average and a .915 save percentage.

“I’m excited about what I’ve seen thus far,” said Mannor. “It’s nice to have so many players back, and it’s obvious that work was put in over the summer, and everyone came into the season ready to go.”

Coach: Tom Palkowski
Career Record: 39-11-3 (2 seasons)

2008-09 Finish: 2nd (14-2-2 MIAC, 18-5-3 overall)
St. Thomas Season Preview

The 2009-2010 St. Thomas women’s hockey team will embark on a mid-season trip to Sweden. Coach Tom Palkowski is also looking for the pieces to come together to make another journey later this winter -- a deep postseason run for the Tommies.

The Tommies graduated three seniors, including All-American forward Jackie Carroll (Career: 61 goals, 75 assists). St. Thomas went 75-28-4 in her four-year era.

But the Toms have 20 returning players led by All-American goalie Lauren Bradel. (Career: 61 games, 40-15-3, .935 save%, 1.52 GAA, 17 shutouts). Bradel’s 1.22 GAA and .950 save percentage last season ranked first nationally among all full-time goalies, and in January she slowed eventual national champion Amherst in a 2-1 Tommie victory.

St. Thomas has ranked first and third among Division III teams the last two seasons in penalty kills at 94%. The defense again looks strong with the Bradel and six returners on the blue line, including four players who have received All-MIAC mention on their careers. The group is led by seniors Kristine Beese (Career: 77 games, 19 goals, 25 assists), Jenny Schnaible (Career: 65 games, 7 goals, 24 assists) and Jamie Hollway (Career: 77 games, four goals, nine assists); and sophomores Jaci Lang, Meghan Parker and Justina DeBruzzi.

St. Thomas will look to get more goal-scoring this season. UST was shutout in four of its five 2008-09 defeats, including three by 1-0 scores. Taking out empty-net goals, St. Thomas held foes to two or less goals in 23 of 26 games.

Top forwards include seniors Kara Ledel (Career: 75 games, 22 goals, 18 assists) and Rachel Zilles (Career: 79 games, eight goals, 25 assists); junior Kelley Fallen (Career: 49 games, 18 goals, 15 assists); and sophomores Jamie Tiede, who had 12 goals and 13 assists last winter to rank among the top freshmen nationally, and Taylor Schluter (24 games, seven goals, 10 assists).

St. Thomas' 24-player roster includes 20 returners and four freshmen. The newcomers are goalie Liz Maidl of Rochester Century, and forwards Sami Broberg of Apple Valley, Korrine O’Connor of New Ulm and Lauren Shultz of Rapid City, S.D.

St. Thomas expects another battle with Gustavus for the championship. Over the last six seasons, Gustavus is 12-4-2 vs. St. Thomas and 101-0-1 against the other MIAC teams. Thirteen of the last 21 Tommie-Gustie meetings have been decided by one-goal or ended in a tie. The Toms reached the conference playoff finals in each of the last seven years. They won one title, and placed second six times – with five one-goal losses to Gustavus (two in overtime).

St. Thomas starts its 2009-2010 season Oct. 30-31 with two home matches vs. UW-Stevens Point at Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights. In their first six seasons on home ice there, the Tommie women have an .801 winning percentage (54-12-3).
