2009 MIAC Fall Playoffs
Fall09Playoffs

St. Paul, Minn. -- Macalester men's soccer, Carleton women's soccer, and Saint Benedict volleyball, all won MIAC Playoff Championships this afternoon on a picture perfect fall day in Minnesota.

The Macalester men's soccer team claimed the first conference playoff crown of the day with a 1-0 win over Carleton on a sun-splashed afternoon in Carleton. Scott Petesch scored at 60:26 and that was all that the #2 Scots needed to claim the victory over the Knights. Carson Gorecki assisted on the goal. Carleton out shot Macalester 12-7 and held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.

In the second Carleton vs. Macalester soccer playoff final of the day, the Carleton women came out on top of their match at Macalester. The #4 Knights used a three goal performance from Niki Tomita (her second hat trick in 10 days) to upset the #3 Scots 3-0. Carleton becomes the first #4 seed to ever win the MIAC Women's Soccer Playoffs. This is the second consecutive MIAC Playoff Title for the Carleton women.

In the Volleyball Finals, Saint Benedict defeated St. Olaf 3-0 at Claire Lynch Hall in St. Joseph on Saturday night. The #1 Blazers were the only top seed to win today and the victory over the #3 Oles gives Saint Benedict the 2009 MIAC Regular Season and Playoff Championships. The Blazers were led by junior Kayli Schumacher, who totaled 10 kills with a .389 hitting percentage.  Junior Calleigh Brown added eight kills and four blocks, while senior Emma Jaynes picked up six kills and 11 digs for CSB. Kim Smisek's nine kills led St. Olaf.

The winners of all of the MIAC Playoff Championships earn automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
