2010 MIAC Baseball Awards - The 2010 MIAC Baseball Awards were announced on Monday. St. Olaf senior catcher Tyler Jones (Farmington, Minn.) was selected as the 2010 MIAC Max Molock Most Valuable Player. Jones batted .481 (37-for-77) during his 20 conference games. He tallied 22 runs, 17 RBI, six doubles, three homers, and two triples. His 37 hits and and 56 total bases led MIAC hitters. St. Thomas senior pitcher Matt Schuld (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) was named the 2010 Mike Augustin Pitcher of the Year. In seven MIAC appearances, Schuld had a 5-1 record with a 2.35 ERA. He pitched 38 1/3 innings, striking out 40, while only walking 13 and allowing only 10 earned runs. Hamline first-year pitcher Matt Eickman (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Maranatha) was chosen as the 2010 MIAC Rookie of the Year. Eickman totaled 39 innings in MIAC play, allowing only 12 earned runs for a 2.77 ERA. He struck out 21, walked eight, and finished his first MIAC season with a 3-3 record. Concordia head coach Bucky Burgau received the 2010 MIAC Jim Dimick Coach of the Year award. Burgau's Cobbers finished conference play with a 14-6 record, a six game improvement in the win column from 2009. Concordia claimed the #2 seed in the MIAC Playoffs, their first playoff appearance since 2005.
2010 MIAC Softball Awards - The 2010 MIAC Softball Awards were announced on May 18. Leading the All-Conference team is MIAC Player of the Year Alison Wright of St. Thomas and MIAC Pitcher of the Year Marta Radcliffe of St. Thomas. Wright (Pewaukee, Wis.) led the MIAC with a .557 batting average in her 22 conference games. Wright was 39-for-70 with 20 RBI, 13 runs, and eight doubles. Wright ends her career as the MIAC's all-time career hits leader. Radcliffe (Lakeville, Minn.) earns the MIAC Pitcher of the Year honor for the second straight season. Radcliffe was 14-0 in MIAC play, pitching 93 2/3 innings and allowing only six earned runs. She finished the MIAC season with a 0.45 ERA, 116 strikeouts and only 25 walks. St. Olaf College first-year outfielder Jessica Wilson (Burnsville, Minn.) batted .385 in conference action during her first MIAC season and was named conference Rookie of the Year. Wilson finished tied for third in league play with 23 RBI and was fourth in the MIAC with 50 total bases. St. Olaf College head coach Ruthie Neuger was named MIAC Coach of the Year in her sixth season at the helm of the Oles. St. Olaf tied for third in the MIAC in 2010 with a 14-8 record. The 14 wins is a most for a St. Olaf team since 1997. The Oles qualified for their first MIAC Playoffs in the history of the program this season.
2010 MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships - The St. Thomas track and field teams continued their MIAC dominance over the weekend, as the Tommies swept the conference’s outdoor championships for the third year in a row, running away with both teams titles at the Saint Mary’s Track and Field Complex. The Tommie men collected their third straight MIAC crown - and 24th in the last 28 conference outdoor championships - Saturday afternoon, collecting 178.5 points to easily outdistance runner-up Hamline (155 points). Bethel (109), St. Olaf (87) and Augsburg (77) rounded out the top five. Not to be outdone by their male counterparts, the UST women also collected outdoor title No. 3 in a row - and 24th in the last 26 conference outdoor championships - picking up 168 points to beat runner-up Gustavus by 25.5 points. Saint Benedict (89), Concordia-Moorhead (88) and Bethel (81) rounded out the top five. During the two-day event, five NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championship automatic-qualifying marks were recorded, while 45 NCAA provisional standards were hit and four MIAC Outdoor Championship records were broken.
2010 MIAC Baseball Playoffs - St. Thomas rallied back after a first round loss to win four straight games and take the 2010 MIAC Baseball Playoffs. The Tommies topped Augsburg 19-9 in the playoff title game on Sunday afternoon in Dundas, Minn. St. Thomas earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with Sunday's victory. In Saturday's 1 p.m. elimination game, #2 Concordia rallied back to force the game with #1 St. Thomas into extra innings, but the Tommies pulled out a 7-6 victory in 11 innings. St. Thomas then beat #4 Augsburg, who came into the game undefeated in the playoffs, 17-1 in Saturday’s nightcap.
St. Olaf's Daymont to step away from track & field - Chris Daymont, a long-time member of the St. Olaf athletics staff, announced Thursday that she will step aside from her duties as head women's track and field coach after this spring. Daymont, an associate professor and the longest-tenured women's track and field coach in the MIAC, will continue to coach the women's cross country team at St. Olaf and will expand her teaching and administrative roles in the department. She teaches exercise physiology and is currently developing a course in exercise prescription. Daymont will assist the athletic director with NCAA and MIAC compliance and will administer the men's and women's home track and field meets.
Moe named National Coach of the Year - Gustavus women’s golf coach Scott Moe has been named the Division III National Coach of the Year by the National Golf Coaches Association. This is the third time that he has been honored as the National Coach of the Year, as he was named the Golf Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in men’s golf in 2004 and the NGCA National Coach of the Year in women’s golf in 2008 and now in 2010. Moe directed the Gustavus women’s golf team to the NCAA Championship for the seventh time in eight years in 2010. Since taking over at the helm in the Fall of 2003, the Gusties finished sixth in 2004, second in 2006, and third in 2007, sixth in 2008, and third in 2009, and second in 2010. This season, Moe’s team produced three NGCA All-America selections (Katie Schenfeld, Taylor Drenttel, and Kali Griggs), four NCGA Midwest All-Region selections (Schenfeld, Drenttel, Griggs, and Ann Jackson), four all-conference honorees (Schenfeld, Drenttel, Griggs, and Jackson), the MIAC Player of the Year (Schenfeld) and MIAC Senior Player of the Year (Griggs).
Ten from MIAC receive GCAA Honors - Ten MIAC individuals have received men's golf awards from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Three golfers from Saint John's were named Division III PING All-Americans. Senior Ben Vangsness (Alexandria, Minn.) and first-year Mark Giorgi (Red Wing, Minn.) were both second team All-America selections. Johnnie sophomore Tony Krogen (Marshall, Minn.) was chosen for the All-America third team. Vangsness, Giorgi, and Krogen were also named to the PING All-Central Region team along with Concordia College sophomore Pat Dietz (Moorhead, Minn.). Giorgi also earned the 2010 Phil Mickelson Award, as the most outstanding freshman in Division III men’s golf. Giorgi was previously named the Central Region Freshman of the Year and was selected for the six-person GCAA All-Freshman Team. Five MIAC men's golfers were named to Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars. Gustavus Adolphus College's A.J. Olson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.), Concordia's Erik Weiss (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.), Saint John's Ben Cahill (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.), and St. Olaf College's Christopher Conklin (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and William Utter (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) all received the honor. Saint John's University head coach Bob Alpers earned Eaton Golf Pride Central Region Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time in his career.
Gustavus finishes second at NCAA Championships - The Gustavus women's golf team finished second at the NCAA Championships, which were held at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida last week. Gustavus made a serious charge for the title on the final day of the tournament and pulled to within five shots of eventual champion Methodist with nine holes left to play, but Methodist rallied on the back nine to finish 19 shots ahead of the Gusties. Gustavus placed three golfers in the top fifteen individually including Katie Schenfeld (Jr., Indianola, Iowa), who finished fifth, Taylor Drenttel (So., Eagan, Minn.), who finished 12th, and Annie Jackson (Fy., Fargo, N.D.), who finished 14th. Prior to the tournament it was announced that Schenfeld was named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-America First Team, while Drenttel and Kali Griggs (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) were named to the All-America Second Team.
Saint John's finishes fourth at NCAA Championships - Saint John’s finished fourth out of 37 teams at the 2010 NCAA Division III Golf Championship on Friday, May 14, in Hershey, Pa. The Johnnies’ posted their second consecutive three-over par 291 to finish fourth with a four-day total of 1191 (+43). Freshman Mark Giorgi (Red Wing, Minn.) posted a three-under par 69, thanks to six birdies, to lead SJU in the final round. He tied for 13th overall with a 294 (+7). Senior Ben Vangsness (Alexandria, Minn.) ended his collegiate career with a one-under par 71 to also tie for 13th overall. Sophomore Tony Krogen (Marshall, Minn.) ended a stellar season with a two-over par 74 and junior Ben Cahill (Grand Rapids, Minn.) tallied a 77 (+5). Freshman Dennis Granath (Bandhagen, Sweden/Farsta Gymnasium) posted a 79 (+7) to tie for 35th overall (+14). The Johnnies have now finished in the top eight of the national tournament in nine of their 11 appearances (four in the top five).
St. Thomas‘ NCAA Run Comes to an End - Linfield (Ore.) hit two home runs and rallied from a 1-0 deficit to post a 3-1 victory over St. Thomas in Sunday's NCAA softball regional title game in Indianola, Iowa. Linfield (39-5) capped a 4-0 run on the tournament and advances to next week's College World Series. The Tommies (40-8) needed a win to force a Monday title game. They led 1-0 after four innings but couldn't close out the victory. UST outhit Linfield 6-5 but missed a couple of scoring chances. Rachel Tondryk went 2-for-3 for UST, which went 6-2 in the postseason. The Tommies took second in the regional and posted the program's seventh consecutive 40-win season. After a 2-4 start, they won 38 of their last 42 games. St. Thomas (40-7) now has won 40 games for the seventh consecutive season.
Best Season Ever - The best season in the history of Carleton men’s tennis came to a close during the 2010 NCAA Championships following a 5-0 loss to national No. 13 Trinity University (Texas). All of the matches were hotly contested; especially the top two doubles matches, which were decided in tiebreakers. The 2010 season included several momentous highlights, including head coach Stephan Zweifel being honored as Central Region Coach of the Year, a school record-tying 20 victories, Zweifel’s 200th career victory, the Knights’ first MIAC Playoff title, and the Knights’ first-ever triumph in the opening round of the national tournament—a 5-0 result over the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Hauff finishes strong at NCAAs - Saint Benedict sophomore golfer Kathryn Hauff (Fargo, ND, Shanley) used a final round 80 to finish in 47th place at the NCAA Division III Golf National Championships. The round, Hauff's best of the tournament, included a two over par front nine. The finish brings to a close a stellar season for Hauff during which she recorded the lowest 18 and 36 hole scores in Blazer history.
No facility, No problem - Despite losing four major athletics venues during the last 12 months, St. Thomas teams capped a successful MIAC year with nine regular-season and four playoff championships representing 11 of 20 total sports. With no home venue in 2009-2010 for volleyball, basketball, tennis and swimming, the Toms still swept the conference men's and women's all-sport title for the third year in a row. UST teams placed in the top four in the MIAC standings in 21 of 22 sports. The lone sport to place fifth, women's basketball, later won the MIAC playoffs and was among nine Tommie teams to qualify for the NCAA playoffs.
Bethel Duo Shines Brightly at MIAC Meet – Bethel’s Marie Borner (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) broke her own school record in the 800 meter run as one of her two wins on Saturday afternoon at the MIAC Championships. Borner’s time of 2:07.84 beats her previous best time by almost a second and a half, and gives her the best time in Division III in the event to date. Taylor Ferda (Sr., Whitefish, Mont.) earned an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles, and also set a new school record by finishing in 52.17. His time also sets a new MIAC meet record. Ferda, along with Borner, now has automatic qualifying times in two different events. He is currently ranked second in Division III in the 110-meter hurdles, while ranking fourth in the 400-meter hurdles.
Mac’s First Four-Time All-MIAC pick - Senior pitcher James Murrey (Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) is Macalester’s first four-time All-MIAC pick in baseball. Murrey led the conference in strikeouts the last two seasons after ranking second in the league as a freshman and sophomore, and finishes his Macalester career with 28 wins and 308 strikeouts.
Several Knights Shine at MIAC meet - Carleton sophomore Simone Childs-Walker (So./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) swept the long-distance events at the MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the second consecutive year. She currently ranks sixth in the nation in the 10,000-meter run and 12th in the 5,000-meter run. Ranked 18th nationally, Senior Laura Roach (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) finished second in the steeplechase with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11:00.17 and earned All-MIAC status. Kelly Lovett (Jr./Portland, Ore./Lincoln), who is currently ranked 14th in the country, added a second place finish in the javelin at 41.41m, also earning All-Conference and an NCAA provisional mark.
Auggies Make Postseason History - The Augsburg baseball team competed in its second-ever MIAC postseason playoff tournament over the weekend in Dundas, claiming its first berth since 2005. On the strength of wins over No. 1-seed St. Thomas and No. 2-seed Concordia on Friday, the No. 4-seed Auggies reached the title series, but fell twice to St. Thomas on Saturday and Sunday to finish second in the playoff race. With the baseball team competing in the conference postseason, it marks the first time in Augsburg history that four Auggie teams have clinched MIAC playoff berths in a single school year. Augsburg had three teams clinch MIAC postseason berths four previous times in school history. This school year, the Auggie volleyball, men's basketball and men's hockey teams joined the baseball team in competing in the MIAC playoffs.
Returning All-MIAC - Five Saint John’s baseball student-athletes earned 2010 All-MIAC honors on May 17: senior first baseman Kyle Henkemeyer (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice), junior pitcher Brett Kramer (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd), sophomore designated hitter Bert Marsnik (Annandale, Minn.), junior catcher Brian Skluzacek (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) and sophomore pitcher Hayden Zimmerman (New Richmond, Wis.). Skluzacek was also named to the MIAC All-Defensive Team and Henkemeyer to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. Since 1978, SJU has never had four returning All-MIAC players (three, three times), which head coach Jerry Haugen will welcome back in 2011.
Wildcats Pounce School Records - The St. Kate's track and field team scored the second most points (48.5) in school history at last week's MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Wildcats set new school records in the 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 4 x 100 relay, 4 x 800 relay, 4 x 400 relay and the shot put. For the first time in St. Kate's school history, a relay team has made the NCAA National Performance List. The Wildcats 4 x 400 meter relay team of Kayla Engel, Kim Engel, Amanda Manship, and Erin Coughlin join with Sami Larson (shot put) and Greta Sieve (steeplechase & 5k) to give St. Kate's the largest number of national list performances in school history.
Auggie Men’s Best Under Barker - On the strength of seven All-MIAC performances and five All-MIAC honorable-mention efforts, the Augsburg men's track and field team recorded one of its best-ever finishes at the MIAC outdoor championships at St. Mary's. As a team, Augsburg placed fifth at the MIAC meet with 77 points. The fifth-place finish marks the highest Augsburg has finished at the outdoor conference championships under 16th-year head coach Dennis Barker, and is the best outdoor championship team score in school history. Nick Ward (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) won the conference title in the 100-meter dash for the second time in the three years, recording a time of 10.92 seconds. Ward also recorded a third-place finish in the long jump event with a distance of 6.44 meters (21-feet-1.25). Rick Wolke (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn.) recorded two top-three finishes for the Auggies, finishing second in the 200-meter dash with an NCAA championships provisional qualifying time and school-record time of 21.61 seconds, and finishing third in the 100-meter dash in 11.30 seconds.
Coach Nause Makes U.S. Open - Macalester’s men’s and women’s golf coach Martha Nause has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open Championships, which will be contested July 5-11 at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh. Nause qualified for her second U.S. Open in three years by shooting rounds of 75 and 74 to win the sectional qualifier with a 149 score Monday (May 17) at White Bear Yacht Club. Coach Nause played at the 2008 U.S. Open at Interlachen Country Club in Edina.
Saint Mary’s Track and Field Highlights - Saint Mary’s track and field athlete Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships with her second-place hammer throw of 47.14 at the MIAC Outdoor Championships last weekend. Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) and Ryan Wockenfus (New London, Wis.) joined Harstad as second-place conference finishers in the hammer and javelin, respectively, while Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) chipped in third-place efforts in the 100 and 200.
Two of the Pipers' MIAC Championships came from First-years – Hamline athlete John Yates (Bemidji, Minn.) won the javelin in just his fourth collegiate meet and Shaise Schuette (Anoka, Minn.) won the 2010 pole vault title at this year’s MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, after Schuette won the indoor title. Hamline also set two new school records at the meet - Aaron Wilkerson (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) in the hammer throw at 56.43 meters (185-1) and Andy Marnach (Sr., Hokah, Minn.) in the 200-meter dash in 21.85.
Blazers Have Strong Finish at MIAC meet - Three individuals and two relay team from Saint Benedict track and field team provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships, which are set for May 28-31, 2010 in Marietta, Ohio. First-year Danielle Busch (New Prague, MN, New Prague) qualified in the pole vault, reaching a height of 3.68m. She took first in the event at the MIAC Championships, and set a school record with the height. Junior Julia Renner (Shoreview, MN, Mounds View) placed first at the MIAC Championships and set a school record in the long jump with a distance of 5.57m, qualifying her for the NCAA Championship. Junior Jillian Daleiden (Blaine, MN, Blaine) qualified in the 400m dash, taking second place in the MIAC Championship and setting a school record with a time of 57.29. The 4x400m relay team, made up of Dalaiden, sophomore Allison Eckrich (Spearfish, SD, Spearfish), and first-year runners Anna Williams (Apple Valley, MN, Eastview), and Erin Sand (New Prague, MN, New Prague), set a school record while qualifying for the NCAA Championship with a time of 3:55.08. The 4x100m relay team ran with a qualifying time of 48.32. The team consists of sophomore Natasha Harr (St. Cloud, MN, St. Cloud Technical), first-year Diane Beckius (Avon, MN, Albany), first-year Clare Murn (Canton, GA, St. Cloud Tech), and junior Abby Neigebauer (Waseca, MN, Waseca).
Sieve takes the Steeplechase – St. Catherine track and field athlete Greta Sieve set an MIAC meet record in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Her time of 10:46.23 was four seconds under the previous meet record. With the victory Sieve also became the first Wildcat MIAC Champion since Anne Sikorra won the Heptathlon in 2002.
All-Region Honorees – Thirteen MIAC softball players have been named to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Region Team for the Midwest. First team honors went to Marta Radcliffe, Allison Wright, Erica Wilson, and Sydney Marquardt from St. Thomas as well as Kelly Berg from Bethel. Second team honors were received by Lisa Klass of Gustavus and third team honors went to Betsie Collins and Emily Wendorff of Gustavus, Crystal Barriga of Macalester, Heidi Larsen from Hamline, Kellie Simons and Erin Stenseth of Saint Mary’s, and Ali Berens from St. Olaf.
Auggie Sprinters Shine at MIAC Meet - With dominant efforts from its sprinters, the Augsburg women's track and field team placed eighth at the MIAC championships at St. Mary's with 54 points. Shanek Telphia (FY, Chicago, Ill./Gage Park HS) led the Auggies by winning the conference title in the 100-meter dash (12.44 seconds), while placing second in the 200 (25.54). She also finished third in the long jump. The Auggie 400-meter relay squad of Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), Telphia, Ashley Carney (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS), and Katie Vrieze (JR, Richfield, Minn.) set a school record in the 400-meter relay en route to the Auggie women's first outdoor relay conference title since 2004, while shattering the previous mark by more than a second with a time of 47.88 seconds. The relay time is an NCAA championships provisional qualifying mark, and is the 12th-fastest time among NCAA Division III teams this season.
Two for Two - A pair of Hamline track and field athletes turned in two All-MIAC performances at the conference meet. Becky Culp (Fy., Lino Lakes, Minn.) had an NCAA provisional qualifying throw to place second in the discus at 41.97 meters (137-8). She was third in the shot put with a throw of 12.47 meters (40-11). Margot Branigan (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) posted third-place finishes in both the 10,000-meter run (37:47.88) and the 5000-meter run (17:53.82).
National Players of the Week - Bethel senior outfielder John Slick and St. Thomas senior pitcher Matt Schuld were named NCAA Division III National Players of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association last week. Slick was named National Hitter of the Week, an honor his younger brother and teammate Jay earned earlier this season. Schuld was named the National Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week. Slick (River Falls, Wis.) helped Bethel win three games in the final week of the regular season by posting a .583 average and driving in the winning runs in two of the three victories. Schuld (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) went 2-0 on the week and broke the conference career wins record at 28 as he helped the fifth-ranked Tommies secure the program's eighth consecutive MIAC championship.

St. Thomas to face Carthage in NCAA First Round Tomorrow - St. Thomas will be the second seed in what appears to be a loaded six-team NCAA Baseball Playoff regional in Whitewater, Wis. The double-elimination tourney runs Wednesday through Saturday. No. 2-ranked and host UW-Whitewater (38-5), No. 5-rated UST (33-7) and No. 9-ranked St. Scholastica (38-6) were awarded the top three seeds. UW-Stevens Point (29-15), Carthage (Wis.) (28-16) and Aurora (Ill.) (27-14) are the other three teams. The Tommies will face Carthage in Wednesday's second game at 1 p.m., following the 10 a.m. game between Whitewater and Aurora. The 4 p.m. game pitches St. Scholastica and UW-Stevens Point. The Tommies beat Carthage 3-1 in an elimination game at the 2009 College World Series. They also beat the Redmen 2-1 in 10 innings last March 20 in the Metrodome.
Gustavus Tennis Headed to Finals - The Gustavus women’s tennis team earned a berth into the NCAA Team Finals with a 5-0 victory over UW-Whitewater in the NCAA Midwest Region Final on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties, who won the NCAA Regional for the 10th consecutive year are currently on a 16-match winning streak and enter the finals with a record of 33-10 overall. Gustavus, which is the #8 seed, will face #2 seed Williams College on Tuesday, May 25 at 2 pm (EST). The NCAA Division III Team Quarterfinals will be held at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia on May 25-27.
Last Chance Meets – MIAC track and field athletes will participate in a couple last chance meets this week as final tune-ups before the NCAA Championships May 27th-29th in Berea, Ohio. MIAC men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will be sending athletes to the UW-La Crosse Last Chance Qualifier this Thursday, May 20th. Participants will compete with the hopes of improving on provisionally qualifying times or changing standards to meet NCAA automatic qualifications. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The following day, Concordia and Hamline will also participate in the North Central Invite in Naperville, Ill. which is set to being at 3 p.m.
Gustavus’ Donkena selected for NCAA Singles Championship - Gustavus sophomore Amrik Donkena (Rochester, Minn.) has been selected to play in the singles draw at the 2010 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships. Donkena will compete against a field of 32 competitors at the individual championships. He is the only player from the MIAC to be selected to compete in the singles competition. The singles championships will be hosted by Oberlin College, May 28-30 in Oberlin, Ohio. Donkena enters the NCAA Singles Championship as the 11th ranked player in the Central Region. Krebsbach and Schmidt selected to compete at NCAA Championships - Gustavus senior women’s tennis player Sierra Krebsbach and Carleton sophomore Kathryn Schmidt have been selected to play in the singles draw at the 2010 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships. They will compete against a field of 32 competitors at the individual championships. The singles championships will be hosted by the University of Mary Washington, May 28-30, at the Battleground Tennis Complex in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

3 - At the MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Saint John’s claimed the top three spots, with three NCAA provisional marks in the discus, as sophomore Wade Powers (Hawick, Minn./New London-Spicer) claimed the MIAC title with a toss of 48.59 meters. Juniors Tim Juba (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and Griffin Hayes (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy), last year’s champion, followed closely in second (47.29 meters) and third (47.26 meters), respectively. The Johnnies, however, finished sixth out of 11 teams at the 2010 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The sixth-place finish is the lowest for SJU at the MIAC Outdoor Championships since 1965 (seventh).
5 - The Hamline men's track and field team turned in five championship performances at the conference championships over the weekend. They won the 10,000-meter run (Ian Bauer, Sr., Roseville, Minn.), the javelin (John Yates, Fy., Bemidji, Minn.), hammer throw (Aaron Wilkerson, Sr., Roseville, Minn.), pole vault (Shaise Schuette, Fy., Anoka, Minn.), and the 1600-meter relay [Andy Marnach (Sr., Hokah, Minn.), Christian Willman (Fy., Rosemount, Minn.), Tyson Molitor (Jr., Belgrade, Minn.), and Brent Nelson (Sr., New London, Minn.)].
15 - No. 5-ranked St. Thomas (33-7) reached the NCAA regional baseball playoffs for the 15th time in 16 seasons. It will be the Tommies' 18th bus trip to Wisconsin for a regional or national tournament since 1995. Coach Chris Olean's team is the No. 2 seed in the Whitewater regional, which includes three top-eight ranked teams. UST lost 3-2 to Augsburg last Friday to open the MIAC playoffs but stormed back to win four elimination games and capture the conference playoff crown for the eighth time in the 11-year history of the event. UST has had only five errors in its last 13 games.
21 - The Concordia women's track and field team finished in fourth place at the recently completed MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet marking the 21st straight year that the Cobbers have posted a top five finish at the conference outdoor meet.
65 - St. Thomas swept the MIAC outdoor track and field team titles for men and women last weekend in Winona. Women's coach Joe Sweeney won his 65th all-time conference title in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field as 20 athletes contributed points.

Carleton seniors Dan Matthews (Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall) and Kelsey Ihinger (Eden Prairie, Minn.) have been awarded the prestigious Fulbright scholarship, a federally funded exchange program that supports work abroad with the mission of “increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” Matthews, a political science major and a member of the Carleton baseball team, and Ihinger, a Spanish major and a four-year member of the Carleton swimming and diving team, will each be using their grants to serve as teaching assistants in Madrid, Spain. Both Knights are set to start their Fulbright programs in the fall.
