Thanks for coming, Mom, sorry I took out your record
HU swimmer Hannah Hawker broke her way into the school All-Time Top Ten when she won the 100-Yard Backstroke in a meet against Concordia last Friday when she clocked in at 1:02.26. Her mother, Holly Bowman, was on hand to witness the event. But one could excuse her if she had mixed feelings about it. Hawker’s entrance into the record book knocked out the No. 10 swimmer, a woman whose effort of 1:03.38 had been on the books since 1984. Her name? Holly Bowman.
Gustavus' 'Coach P' looks For 100
After earning his 150th career win earlier this season against Bethel on Nov. 11, head men’s hockey coach Brett Petersen is now looking to pick up career win "100" within MIAC play. Coach Petersen is currently 99-72-16 (.572) against conference opponents over his 12-year career at Gustavus.
Streaks end for Saint Mary's women, St. Thomas men
With their 55-50 win at Saint Benedict last Wednesday, the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team put an end to a pair of streaks that started during the 1986-87 season. SMU put an end to a 26-game losing streak at Saint Benedict, while also completing its first season sweep of the Blazers since beating CSB 57-53 and 59-42 during the 1985-86 season. The Cardinals finished 20-2 and placed third in the NCAA Division III Regional that year.
St. Thomas' 82-77 overtime loss at Gustavus last Saturday in St. Peter ended three unusual streaks for UST men's basketball. Prior to the game, the Tommies had won seven consecutive overtime decisions; five in a row vs. the Gusties; and 26 consecutive (and 44 of their last 45) Saturday games. The Tommies play host to archrival St. John's on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. It's the first time since 1980 -- when games were played in the old O'Shaughnessy Hall -- that the rivalry will be played in St. Paul without a Jim Smith-Steve Fritz coaching matchup. The pair squared off 71 times over the last 31 seasons before Fritz' retirement last spring.
Buzzer beater snaps slide for Carleton men’s hoops
The Carleton College men’s basketball team didn’t just halt a 10-game losing streak with a 54-52 victory over red-hot Bethel on Monday night. The Knights did so in dramatic fashion as Tom Sawatzke drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to secure the win and snap Carleton’s longest slide since dropping 12 straight games during the 1984-85 campaign. The recent losing streak included four setbacks by two or less points. Sawatzke matched his career high on Monday with 5 three-pointers and finished with a game-high 17 points. Video of the game-winning shot can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru0X8cVXMlI
Macalester's Peters joins 1,000-point club
Junior forward Pierce Peters (Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) became the 19th and newest member of the Macalester men’s basketball 1,000-point club when he converted a three-point play late in Monday’s loss to St. Thomas. Pierce currently ranks third in the MIAC in scoring (18.1), fifth in rebounding (6.4), second in blocks (1.5), third in three-point accuracy (.434), sixth in threes made (1.8), third in free throw percentage (.895) and sixth in steals (1.5).

Four Auggies earn MIAC weekly honors
Augsburg student-athletes Trevor Doden (men's hockey), Ashley Carney (women's indoor track) and Michael Harley and John Spray (men's indoor field) all received MIAC Athlete-of-the-Week honors for their performances for the Auggies last week.
Doden contributed four of Augsburg's eight goals in a weekend sweep of St. Mary's University, including his first collegiate hat-trick in Saturday's 5-4 overtime win. Carney claimed a victory in the women's 60-meter dash, with her 7.87-second time a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Her time is the fastest among MIAC sprinters and is currently tied for 14th-fastest among NCAA Division III women nationally. Spray and Harley both recorded 1.89-meter (6-feet, 2.25-inches) efforts in the men's high jump, breaking the old indoor school record of 1.86 meters (6-feet, 1.25-inches), set by Luke Trees in 2001.

Royal "Sweeps"takes
Over the weekend Bethel University captured a weekend sweep, winning all four games played. The women's hockey team initiated the weekend party, when taking on the Wildcats of St. Catherine University. BU won 3-2 with a game-winning goal by Molly Eagles in the final four minutes of the contest. The women skaters delivered an encore performance Saturday, as Cristina Masten posted her second goal of the game with 1:34 remaining in the overtime period, handing the Royals its second consecutive win over SCU. The men's and women's basketball team followed suit Saturday when hosting Macalester College at the Robertson Center Gym, as the women defeated the Scots 66-56 and the men captured its fourth straight victory with a 85-65 win over Mac. In the women's competition, the MIAC's leading scorer Taylor Sheley paced Bethel with her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 26 points and 11 rebounds. BU's men were led by this week's MIAC men's basketball athlete of the week, Daniel Baah, who composed his second 20-plus effort of the week, along with five rebounds and two assists.
BU: Becoming dangerous
Two weeks ago the Bethel University men's basketball squad was 2-4 in MIAC play, battling injury and fatigue, and legitimately concerned about the post-season. However, two weeks later the Royals have endured one of the toughest stretches of its schedule, and compiled four straight wins over the top three teams in the conference to pull within one game of playoff contention. With a 6-4 conference record, BU sits in seventh place as it attempts to keep its stock high throughout the remainder of the 2011-12 campaign. Several players have contributed to the new wave of play, including back-to-back MIAC player's of the week Taylor Hall and Daniel Baah. Hall has displayed his versatility, averaging 16.3 points, 5.9 boards, 2.5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block per game. Baah and newcomer Kyle Zimmerman have both added another 12-plus points-per-contest. Bethel will bring its show on the road this week as the Royals face Carleton, Concordia, and St. Olaf in its next three contests.

All told three pool records have been broken this season.
Knights tabbed to Collegiate Baseball Watch List
Five members of the Carleton College baseball team were named to Collegiate Baseball’s annual NCAA Division III National “Players to Watch” list. The quintet are southpaw Paul Dimick (Sr./Northfield, Minn.), righthander Anderson Cole (So./Aspen, Colo.), catcher Jeff Dsida (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), infielder Alex Wirta (Sr./Corte Madera, Calif./Redwood), and outfielder Ray Yong (So./Elmhurst, Ill./York). Dimick is already in the Knights all-time top 10 in a multitude of statistics, including innings pitched, era, starts, appearances, and saves. Cole had a tremendous rookie campaign and was one of the Knights’ top hurlers, posting a 2.65 ERA, tops on the staff and fifth-best in the MIAC among pitchers with at least 35 innings pitched. Dsida took over the catching duties as a rookie and hit a robust .370 while pacing the Knights in slugging (.519) and ranking second in the MIAC with a .485 on-base percentage. Wirta led the team with a .388 batting average and 40 hits, while finishing second on the roster in runs and RBI. Yong hit .314, led the MIAC with 15 doubles, and boasted team highs in RBI and runs scored.

Defense down the stretch keys OT victory
Concordia's defense stopped St. Mary's from scoring in the final minute of regulation and then in the final minute of overtime to help the Cobbers escape with a 60-59 win in Winona on Sunday. The Cobbers held the Cardinals from scoring with the game tied at 50-50 in the final 14 seconds of regulation and then secured the win by stopping SMU from driving the length of the court to get a chance at attempting a game-winning field goal.

Tinklenberg heating up
Gustavus sophomore swimmer Alissa Tinklenberg (Willmar, Minn.) has been raising the temperature of every pool she dives into as of late. The sophomore won the 200 backstroke, 500 freestyle, and 1,000 freestyle, while swimming the anchor leg of the first place 200-free relay. Terrific start to 2012
January was a good month for St. Thomas -- its basketball and hockey teams went 29-3 against MIAC competition. The three losses, all in men's basketball, were decided on a buzzer-beater (Bethel), on a late 3-point shot (St. John's), or in overtime (Gustavus). Six of the wins came in overtime or on shots made in the final seconds or regulation. The Tommies come into February leading the conference and nationally ranked in both men's hockey (No. 7) and women's basketball (No. 15); and tied for first in men's hoops. The 11-0 record by the UST women was the best in all of college basketball for January.
Tommie goalies take center stage
UST hockey goalies came up big last weekend in four close wins over strong St. Olaf teams. Freshman Drew Fielding stopped 55 of 58 shots as St. Thomas won 3-2 and 2-1, the latter in overtime. Fielding (1.84 GAA, .928 save percentage) improved to 7-0 on his college career. The Tommie women's goalie, sophomore Alise Riedel, turned away 52 of 53 shots in a 2-1 and 4-0 sweep of the Oles. Riedel (1.67 GAA, .937 save percentage) is 6-1 in her last seven starts.
Streaks stopped for St. Thomas basketball
