ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Several standout student-athletes were honored Monday with Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athlete-of-the-Week awards in their respective sports. Throughout the 2011-12 winter season, the MIAC will present awards in basketball, hockey, swimming and diving and indoor track and field, with the winner announced each Monday afternoon.

The MIAC Basketball Athlete-of-the-Week awards went to a pair of players that had standout weeks to help their team's hopes of securing a bid to the MIAC Playoffs. The men's honor went to Saint John's Aaron Barmore, who shot a perfect 12-for-12 from the field for the week while averaging 16.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in the Johnnies' two big wins. The women's honor was claimed by Saint Mary's Jessica Thone, who led the Cardinals' to a 2-1 record while averaging 17.3 points, 4.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game.

St. Olaf's Peter Rohn received the MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week award thanks to his six-point weekend and clutch goal-scoring to help the Oles earn a two-game sweep of Augsburg. The MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week award was won by St. Catherine's Cassie Rooney, who had a hat trick that featured both the game-tying and game-winning goals in an upset win at then-No. 9-ranked Concordia.

Carleton swept the MIAC Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week honors thanks to its performance at the Minnesota Challenge over the weekend. The men's honor was claimed by Knights' sophomore Jesse Gourevitch, who set new personal bests in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. On the women' side, Erin McDuffie was the top Division III finisher in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races to claim the conference's weekly award.

On the track, Men's Indoor Track Athlete-of-the-Week honors went to Bethel's Jordon Spronk, who was superb Saturday in both the 400-meter dash and leading off the Royals' 4x400-meter relay team. Top field honors for the week were claimed by Gustavus' Josh Owens, who won the pole vault and set a new Gusties' team record in the process. The women's track honor went to Carleton's Alison Smyth for her performance in the mile on her home track on Friday. Meanwhile, Saint Benedict's Julia Renner claimed field honors for her first-place performance in the pentathlon, which is now No. 1 in the MIAC and No. 15 nationally.

The MIAC Athlete-of-the-Week awards will be given out each week to top performers in each sport throughout the 2011-12 season. Student-athletes are nominated by their coaches and sports information directors, with winners chosen by a selection committee.
