All-Sports Competition History
A traveling All-Sports Trophy is awarded to the college that accumulates the best all-sports record during the MIAC academic year. The MIAC All-Sports trophies had its beginnings in the 1963-64 school year, when Bob Schabert, who, at the time, covered the MIAC for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, began determining men's all-sports results. The current men's trophy, the George Durenberger Trophy, was donated by Saint John's University beginning in the 1972-73 school year. The women's trophy, the Pat Wiesner Trophy, was donated by Macalester College beginning in the 1983-84 school year, a year after women's sports competition began in the MIAC. Starting in the 2003-2004 season, the determination of the All-Sports trophy altered slightly. First place points are determined by the number of teams participating in that sport. Second place, third place, etc., receive points in a descending order, based on the first place point total. Prior to this change, determination of the recipients of the All-Sports trophies was calculated as follows: Men - 11 points will be awarded for first place, 10 for second, nine for third, etc. Women - 12 points for first, 11 for second, etc.
