WOMEN'S RECAP
In one of the closest races of the night, the Gustavus entry in the 200 freestyle relay edged Carleton College by 0.04 seconds with a winning time of 1:37.77.
The Gusties' Carrie Gunderson successfully defended her title in the 500 freestyle, recording a time of 5:07.98.
Carleton's Kate Alexander continued her domination of the medley events, shattering her own conference and meet mark as she cruised to the victory in the 200 IM with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:06.94, more than two seconds better than last year's time.Carleton finished the evening with top honors in the 400 medley relay.
Gustavus possesses a 29-point advantage over St. Olaf after the first day of competition. The three-day meet continues Friday morning.
MEN'S RECAP
St. Olaf opened the racing portion with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay and closed the night with a come-from-behind win in the 400 medley relay.
The Gustavus men got a repeat win from Matt Stewart in the 500 freestyle, missing his own meet record by a hundreth of a second with a time of 4:29.16. The Gusties took five of the top six spots in the event.
Carleton's Ted Marschall broke his own conference record in taking top honors in the 200 individual medley with a winning time of 1:49.72, the fastest recorded time in Division III this season. He held off St. Olaf's Nelson Westby, the defending champ, by nearly two seconds.
The 50-yard freestyle was the evening's tightest race as St. Thomas' T.J. Hardy won by 0.02 seconds.
Gustavus holds a 22-point lead over St. Olaf after the first day of competition. The three-day meet continues Friday morning.
