Macalester SAAC Raises Money for Cancer Research
Think Pink Day raises money for cancer research
Macalester’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and the Macalester Kilt Krew sponsored “Think Pink” day at the Mac vs. St. Olaf basketball doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 9) and raised about $750 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer. The first 200 attendees were given Think Pink t-shirts and asked for donations.
Think Pink is a national campaign organized by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA community to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began Think Pink in 2007 and more than 120 schools unified for this effort in the inaugural year. This year, about 900 colleges are expected to participate during the week of February 8-17.
"A big part of SAAC's mission is to get athletes involved in projects and causes that transcend just athletic participation," Macalester SAAC president Marisa Raether said. "Think Pink Day was a great opportunity for all of us involved in athletics at Macalester to promote a very worthy cause, and in so doing, reach out to a broader community. On behalf of SAAC, I'm proud of the amount of money we raised and the widespread support that this important event received."
SAAC members Maria Princin, Olivia Abbott and Amanda Cagen collect donations at the front door during Think Pink Day.
