Championship Recap - Men
Gustavus entered the third and final round trailing Saint John's by five strokes, but easily passed the Johnnies with a 288 team score to win the MIAC Men's Golf Championship at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.
The Gusties finished with an 880 team score, while the Johnnies finished with an 892. St. Thomas (911) held off a hard-charging St. Olaf (914) for third place.
Led by individual medalist Ajeetesh Sandhu, the Gusties ended SJU's three-year run as conference champs. Sandhu shot a 72 in windy conditions after scores of 74 and 71 the first two rounds. Sandhu's three-day score of 217 edged Joe Schoolmeesters of Saint John's by two strokes for top individual honors. Schoolmeesters, last year's MIAC medalist, shot a low for the day 71 Monday, but could not catch Sandhu.
Four players tied for third place with marks of 221: John Traecy and Ben Jensen of St. Thomas, and Jordan Hawkinson and Eric Harris of Gustavus.
