2007 MIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship
MINNEAPOLIS - The St. Olaf College men and the Gustavus Adolphus College women claimed MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
Day 3
St. Olaf sealed the win, its first conference title since 2001 and 23rd since 1977, with a first and fourth place finish on the 3-meter board. Christian Lorentzen swept diving events with his Saturday night win on the 3-meter board, setting an NCAA 11-dive qualifying mark of 492.70. Lorentzen, who won the 1-meter on Friday, earned his fourth straight Diver of the Meet with the performance.
St. Olaf took three of the top four spots in the 200 Back, including champion Tom Kukla who swam the event in 1:54.37.
The Oles' other win came from Ben Wareham, who defended his 2006 title in the 200 Breaststroke with 2:05.17. St. Olaf held four of the top five spots in the event.
Gustavus finished close-behind in second place. Teammates Scott Hagemeyer and Brian Amundson shared the 100 Free crown with their 45.69 tie. The Gusties' first year Skylar Davis broke teammate Ben Hanson's meet record in the 1,650 Free with a 1:51.29. Hanson finished second in the event.
The Gusties' dominated the 200 Fly, taking first with Matt Stewart's NCAA "A" cut and MIAC record 1:51.19, and placing five in the top eight.
Day 2
St. Olaf led off the evening with a win in the 200 Medley Relay behind Adam Meyer, Ben Wareham, Nelson Westby and Jake Koch in an MIAC record 1:31.64.
Westby also picked up his second and third individual wins of the championships, taking the 100 Fly in an NCAA "A" cut 49.50 and the 100 Breast in 56.82. He won the 200 IM on Thursday. St. Olaf had five of the top seven spots, including the top three, in the 100 Breast.
Carleton's Ted Marschall won the 400 IM, breaking his own meet record, in 4:00.72.
Gustavus went 1-3-6 in the 200 Free, getting a win from Ben Hanson and a third place finish from Brian Amundson. The Gusties also got a win from Scott Hagemeyer in the 100 Back.
Day 1
The Gustie men got a win from Matt Stewart in the with his meet-breaking 4:29.15 in the 500 Freestyle, which saw Gustavus take four of the top five spots, and from Scott Hagemeyer in the 50 Free.
Gustavus also won the 200 Freestyle Relay in an NCAA "A" cut time of 1:22.34. Saint John's was second and St. Olaf third in the race.
St. Olaf's Nelson Westby broke a meet and MIAC record with his 1:50.96 swim in the 200 IM.
Westby also played a role in St. Olaf's MIAC record-breaking swim in the 400 Medley Relay (3:23.02). The Oles trail Gustavus by nine points.
